Your Genesis physician will conduct a 3-hour comprehensive medical assessment. It includes an identification of current and future medical risk factors, as well as a review of each individual’s personal, physical, psychological, social, and family profile.
You have access to our allied health professional team as needed: registered dietitian, holistic nutritionist, doctor of naturopathic medicine, chiropractor/acupuncturist, osteopath, psychologist, social workers, professional fitness trainers, and an instructor in yoga and pilates.

Paula is an RNA and has worked in the medical field for the past 40 years. She spent a number of years managing the urology department at Sunnybrook medical center. In addition to the work she does for Genesis, Paula spends her time volunteering with the Patient and Family Advisory Committee at NYGH.
Paula is known throughout the medical community and by patients for her warmth, sincerity, efficiency.

How Genesis Began
In the mid 1990s Dr. Sharla Lichtman and Dr. Rochelle Schwartz recognized that it was becoming increasingly challenging to provide medical care to their patients as the Ontario healthcare system began to experience cutbacks with a focus on the bottom dollar rather than quality healthcare.
In an attempt to advocate for their patients and the healthcare system, they became politically active and founded the Coalition of Family Physicians of Ontario.
From 1996-2000, with a backing of a 4000 family physician membership, they worked tirelessly to create positive changes for healthcare and the practice of family medicine. After 4 years of persistent pressure on their medical associations and the government, along with a regular presence in the media, it became clear that their energy and efforts would be better served doing what they could do best—caring for people in a model that enabled them to practice personally-focused, quality, preventative healthcare.
Genesis Professional Group began in 2001 and has grown to include several physicians who all share the same values, deep commitment, and dedication to their patients.

Frequently Asked Questions
During your annual assessment, we spend time reviewing your personal, physical, psychological, social and family history. We also do a detailed assessment of your past and present health in order to determine which issues need to be assessed and pursued in more detail. We decide together what steps we can take, now and in the future, to move towards a healthier lifestyle. Throughout the process we address your risk factors to establish how we can help you become proactive in your own health care. During your annual visit we also do a comprehensive physical examination, along with blood work, electrocardiogram, BMI, vision and hearing testing. All the results are compiled and presented in a comprehensive dossier along with our wellness and preventative medicine recommendations.
The Genesis Professional Group includes a registered dietitian, holistic nutritionist, Doctor of naturopathic medicine, chiropractor/acupuncturist, osteopath, psychologist, social workers, professional fitness trainers, and an instructor in yoga and Pilates.
As part of your annual assessment, you have a certain number of credits towards meeting some of the allied health professionals. The decision on who to see is made collaboratively with your Genesis physician based on each individual’s health needs and interests.
You can continue to see any of the allied health professionals for ongoing consultations on a fee-for-service basis that you arrange with the individual allied health professional.
Any visit concerning an illness, whether physical or emotional, is deemed “medically necessary” and is therefore covered by OHIP.
Your personal Genesis physician is available to you outside of office hours in the evening and weekends for urgent medical problems.
We have five Genesis physicians who are happy to cover for one another when one of them is away. However, when possible and most often Genesis physicians will keep their laptops and cell phones accessible so they can be reached and remain in close contact with the office.
Our publicly funded healthcare system is being challenged with long wait times for medical testing and specialist consultations. Outside of the Genesis Clinic we cannot guarantee quick or easy access to any service. However, our Genesis physicians are well-respected within the healthcare community and are comfortable to advocate for their clients when necessary and help them navigate through the complex maze of the healthcare system. In addition, we have relationships with a number of specialists and hospitals outside of Ontario and Canada and are happy to facilitate medical care and opinions with them when appropriate.
